Bringing your own parts

You can. We install customer-supplied parts on most jobs. Before you buy, here is how our pricing actually works — because for most people, supplying their own parts ends up costing more, not less.

Why people ask

Most shops mark parts up. We don’t.

Customers ask to supply their own parts for one reason: they have been burned by shops that pad the parts bill. It is a fair worry, and it is why so much advice online says to buy your own parts and just pay for labor.

That math does not apply here. We hold direct dealer accounts, and we do not mark parts up on top of that. On most parts, the price we quote you is the manufacturer’s own price — the same number you would pay ordering that part yourself, direct from the people who make it. There is no shop premium stacked on for placing the order.

The math

What supplying your own usually costs

01

The same part price

Ordering direct from the manufacturer typically lands you at the same number we would have quoted. On most parts there is simply no discount to capture by doing it yourself.

02

No warranty from us

Parts you supply are not covered by our limited warranty — parts or labor. If the part fails, is wrong, arrives missing hardware, or damages something else, the diagnostic time, labor and repair are on you.

03

A higher labor rate

We charge a higher labor rate to install customer-supplied parts, because the risk and the time both go up: wrong parts, missing hardware, and return trips are ours to work around.

04

You chase the problem

When we supply the part, we handle the manufacturer claim. When you supply it, that is your phone call, your shipping, and your downtime.

The cheap-part trap

How a lifetime warranty turns into 30 days

Sometimes you really can find a part cheaper — on a marketplace, or at one of the big online off-road retailers. Now and then it is even below what we pay for it. That is the part worth thinking twice about.

Most manufacturers handle warranty claims through the original place of purchase, not with the end customer. So whoever you bought it from is who you have to deal with. The deep discounters are set up to move boxes, and in practice their help often ends when their return window does — frequently around 30 days. Buy a part with a lifetime manufacturer warranty from a seller like that, and what you may have actually bought is a 30-day warranty. Saving a hundred dollars stops looking clever the day a control arm or a shock lets go.

When we supply the part, the purchase sits with a shop that has a direct relationship with that manufacturer. If something goes wrong a year later, we make the call, and we already have the invoice.

When it makes sense

Times we say bring it

There are real cases where supplying your own is the right move: you already bought the parts, they came with the vehicle, they were a gift, the item is discontinued or used, or it is something we do not have an account for. We will install it, tell you honestly what we think of it, and price the labor up front.

What we ask is that you bring everything — hardware, brackets, instructions — and that you understand the coverage and labor differences above. We do reserve the right to decline a part we do not think is safe to put on your vehicle. That is not us protecting a margin; it is us not wanting our name on a failure.

Questions

Parts and pricing FAQ

Do you install customer-supplied parts?

Yes, on most jobs. Labor is billed at a higher rate for customer-supplied parts, and they carry no warranty from us, parts or labor. We may decline a part we do not consider safe to install.

Will I save money buying the parts myself?

Usually not. On most parts our price is the manufacturer’s own price, the same number you would pay ordering it yourself, because we do not mark parts up. Add the higher labor rate and the lost warranty coverage and supplying your own typically costs more.

I found the part cheaper online. Should I buy it?

Check who honors the warranty first. Most manufacturers require claims to go through the original seller, and deep-discount sellers often only help inside their return window. A lifetime warranty is worth more than a small discount.

What if the part I supply is wrong or missing hardware?

The vehicle usually sits until the right part arrives, and the extra diagnostic and labor time is billable. When we supply the part, sorting that out is our problem, not yours.

Can you quote parts and labor separately?

Yes. Ask for the breakdown when you get your quote, and compare our part price against the manufacturer’s own price. We are comfortable with that comparison.

Zach was insanely helpful. He handled a pretty out of the box request with ease. I will recommend him to anyone in the area or passing through!

I had a great experience at Off Camber 4x4 as Zach is a true professional and pleasure to work with. He went above and beyond getting all hardware snugged up even though it wasn’t in the estimate - with being a late request made when I dropped off the truck. Additionally, Off Camber’s shop not only provided the most reasonable price out of the four estimates I received, they were the ONLY shop that recommended a follow up inspection for the type of service I had done. They installed a leveling kit, control arms, rear shocks, dual exhaust system, and a trailer receiver along with including the complementary inspection at 500 miles to make sure everything was still tight.

I had some Rubicon takeoff springs installed on my Wrangler JL Sport 2 door. It was awesome to watch Zach work. He took time to torque everything properly and still completed the job in a very timely fashion. It was a great experience!
