Plan for the trail before the trip
Everybody who wheels long enough gets stuck. A high-centered frame on a rutted two-track, a drift that was deeper than it looked, a wet clay hill that turned to grease: none of it is a disaster when the vehicle has somewhere safe to attach and the driver has the right gear and knows how to use it.
Recovery goes wrong when people improvise. A strap looped around a tow ball or a factory tie-down hook built for shipping, not pulling. Our part is installing the right gear correctly and making sure you understand it. The same goes for the gear around the recovery: a radio so the group can call it out, and onboard air so you can air down for the trail and back up before the drive home.
Build it in this order
If budget forces choices, this sequence gives the most safety for the money. Each step makes the next one more useful.
Rated attachment points
Front and rear points rated for recovery loads, bolted to the frame. Without them, the best strap in the world has nothing trustworthy to connect to. Many aftermarket steel bumpers include shackle mounts; receiver-mounted shackle blocks cover the rear.
A basic kit
A kinetic rope or snatch strap sized for your vehicle weight, two shackles, gloves, a shovel and a way to air back up. This handles most vehicle-assisted recoveries when you travel with a partner rig.
Traction aids
Traction boards let you drive yourself out of snow, sand and soft mud without a second vehicle. For solo trips they are often the first tool you reach for.
A winch
The tool that works when no one can reach you or a pull needs controlled, steady force. It needs a mounting plate or winch-ready bumper, proper wiring and a rig that can carry the weight up front.

Recovery gear and your suspension
A steel bumper and winch can add well over a hundred pounds to the very front of a vehicle, and factory springs often sag under it. That drop reduces approach clearance and can change how the rig handles in braking. If you are adding a winch, ask about pairing it with a lift kit or springs rated for the added weight; for weight at the back, air bags level a loaded rig.
Most installs get into the bay within about a week after parts arrive. Bring the rig to our shop just off I-25 at Crossroads Blvd, Monday through Friday from 9 to 4; ask about an early drop or late pickup if those hours are tough. We work on rigs from Windsor, Severance, Johnstown, Timnath and across Northern Colorado.
Trail accessories FAQ
What is the most important recovery upgrade?
Rated recovery points front and rear. Every strap, rope and winch line needs a safe place to attach, and factory tie-down loops are usually not designed for recovery loads.
Do I need a winch if I always wheel with a group?
Not always. A good kinetic rope, shackles and traction boards handle most group recoveries. A winch earns its place on harder trails, solo trips and pulls where a running start is unsafe.
Can you show me how to use a winch?
Yes. After install we walk through the controller, free-spooling, spooling the line back under tension and the core safety rules. For hands-on training beyond that, a recovery course is worth the time.
Do you install radios and onboard air too?
Yes. We install GMRS and ham radios, weBoost cell boosters and Garmin inReach mounts, and ARB and Viair onboard compressors. They are often done in the same visit as a winch or bumper, since the wiring runs to the same places.
Do you offer trail recovery or towing?
No. We install winches, bumpers, recovery points and gear so your rig is prepared. For a vehicle stuck on the trail, contact a recovery or towing service.
Can I add recovery points to a stock bumper?
On many vehicles, yes, with bolt-on frame-mounted points or a receiver shackle mount at the rear. Options depend on the platform, so tell us what you drive.
