Onboard air compressors
Air down for traction on the trail and air back up before the pavement, without hauling a portable compressor around. We mount, wire and plumb onboard air so it is ready when you need it.
Lower pressure, better grip
Dropping tire pressure off-road lets the tread flatten out and wrap over rocks, which adds traction, smooths out washboard and makes the tire harder to puncture on a sharp edge. On sand and snow, a longer footprint keeps the rig on top instead of digging in. Many drivers run somewhere in the teens to low twenties on the trail, depending on the tire, the vehicle and the terrain.
The catch is getting that air back before the drive home. Running highway speeds on aired-down tires overheats them and makes the truck wander, so airing back up at the trailhead is a safety step, not a convenience. That is where onboard air earns its keep.
Portable, onboard or with a tank
Every setup does the same job. The difference is how fast it works and how much space it takes.
Portable compressor
Lives in a bag and clamps to the battery when you need it. Nothing to install, but it takes up cargo space, and cheaper units overheat before all four tires are full.
Mounted compressor
Bolted to the vehicle and wired through a switch, with an air coupler at the bumper or in the bed. Always there, always charged, and usually faster than a portable because it runs on a heavier circuit.
Compressor with a tank
An air tank stores a reserve, which speeds up airing up and lets you run air tools like an impact gun or blow out a dusty filter at camp.
Mounted, wired and plumbed
A compressor is a high-current accessory that vibrates and gets hot, so where it goes and how it is wired matter as much as the compressor itself.
Mounting location
Engine bay, under a seat, in the bed or cargo area, or on a rack or bumper, depending on your vehicle and how exposed it will be to water and dust. Many kits include a vehicle-specific bracket.
Wiring
Heavy-gauge wire straight to the battery, a fuse or breaker sized for the compressor and a relay-switched circuit, so it runs at full output without cooking the wiring.
Air lines and couplers
Air line from the compressor to a quick coupler where you can reach all four tires, usually the front or rear bumper, with a long enough hose to go around the vehicle.
Duty cycle
Compressors are rated for how long they can run before resting. We match the compressor to your tire size, so airing up four big tires does not overheat it halfway through.
More than just tires
The same compressor can do more work. Air Lift’s onboard systems air your air bags up and down from the cab, and a tank setup runs small air tools at camp. ARB and Viair compressors
The compressors we install come from ARB and Viair. ARB’s single and twin-motor onboard compressors are built for the trail and mount under the hood or in the cargo area, and the twin fills big tires fast. Viair makes onboard compressor kits and air tanks in a wide range of sizes, which makes it easy to match the setup to your tires and the space you have.
Price comes down to the compressor, whether it has a tank, where it mounts and how far the power and air lines have to run. A single compressor under the hood with a bumper coupler is the quicker job; a compressor and tank in the bed with lines to both bumpers takes more. We quote your vehicle and compressor before ordering. Once parts arrive, most installs are in a bay within about a week. Drop off Monday to Friday between 9 and 4, and ask about an early or late handoff.

What compressor brands do you install?
ARB and Viair. ARB’s single and twin-motor compressors are a common choice for trail rigs, and Viair offers onboard kits and air tanks in many sizes. We match the compressor to your tire size and where it will mount.
What pressure should I air down to?
It depends on the tire, the vehicle and the terrain. Many drivers run somewhere in the teens to low twenties on the trail. Start conservative and go lower only as far as you need, especially with heavier rigs.
Is onboard air worth it over a portable compressor?
If you air down more than a few times a year, usually yes. It is always on the vehicle, runs off a proper circuit and is faster, and it frees up the space a portable takes.
Where should the compressor be mounted?
Somewhere protected from water and dust with airflow to keep it cool. Under the hood, under a seat or in the bed are the common spots, depending on the vehicle.
Can the same compressor fill my air bags?
Yes, with the right setup. Air Lift sells onboard systems made to control air bags, and we can plumb a compressor to handle both.
Do I need an air tank?
Not for airing up tires. A tank speeds things up and is useful if you want to run air tools, but it takes up more space.
