Night driving in Poudre Canyon
Kelly Flats branches off CO-14 some 25 miles past the US-287 junction, so a full day on that road often ends with a long, winding drive out in the dark. Factory halogen headlights can struggle to show the outside edge of a tight bend, the shoulder, or the ditch where animals tend to wait. Statewide, wild animals were the main cause of more than 3,600 crashes in 2025, and October through December are the peak months for collisions. That lines up neatly with fall trips into the high country.
Better headlights and properly aimed fog lamps help on the highway itself. Wider-reaching auxiliary lights earn their place once you turn onto dirt, where there is no traffic to glare and every rock and rut is worth seeing early.
Fog, ditch, bar, and camp
Fog lamps throw a wide, low pattern that stays under snow, dust and fog, which makes them useful on pavement in poor weather. Ditch lights, mounted near the A-pillars, spread light sideways into the inside of a turn and along the shoulder, which is where tight dirt switchbacks hide their surprises. Light bars reach far down an open two-track but belong switched off once you are back on the highway. We carry Diode Dynamics and Form Lighting among other options.
If you camp near Red Feather Lakes or anywhere along Deadman Road, scene lights on a rack or tailgate make setting up after dark far easier than working by headlamp. Rock lights under the rig help you place tires on ledges at night. With a new front bumper in the plan, we can mount lights in its built-in pockets. Lifting the truck? What drivers ask about brighter lights
At what distance does Colorado require me to dim my brights?
Under C.R.S. 42-4-217, within 500 feet of oncoming traffic and within 200 feet when you are behind another vehicle, unless you are passing.
Can I leave my light bar on while driving CO-14 or US-287?
No. Treat a light bar as off-road equipment and keep it switched off on public roads. Colorado also limits how many bright front auxiliary lamps can be lit at once on a highway under C.R.S. 42-4-219.
For tight canyon curves, are ditch lights or fog lights more useful?
They solve different problems. Fog lamps help on pavement in bad weather. Ditch lights light up the inside of turns and shoulders on dirt roads. Many rigs run both on separate switches.
Will camp lights run my battery down overnight?
LEDs draw little power, but anything left on with the engine off still drains the battery. We wire camp lighting on its own switched, fused circuit so it is easy to shut off.
